Randall Sullivan - The Miracle Detective artwork The Miracle Detective
Randall Sullivan
Genre: Christianity
Price: $11.99
Publish Date: December 01, 2007
Publisher: Grove Atlantic
Seller: OpenRoad Integrated Media, LLC

The Rolling Stone reporter’s “fascinating . . . globe-trotting, first-person spiritual odyssey” into the Catholic Church’s investigations of reported miracles ( Seattle Post-Intelligencer ).   In a tiny, dilapidated trailer in northeastern Oregon, a young woman saw a vision of the Virgin Mary in an ordinary landscape painting hanging on her bedroom wall. After some skepticism from the local parish, the matter was placed “under investigation” by the Catholic diocese. Investigative journalist and Rolling Stone contributor Randall Sullivan wanted to know how, exactly, one might conduct an official inquiry into such an incident. So began his eight year immersion into the world of “Miracle Detectives.”   Sullivan set off to interview theologians, historians, and postulators from the Sacred Congregation of the Causes for Saints, men charged by the Vatican with testing the miraculous and judging the holy. Sullivan traveled from the Vatican to the village of Medjugorje, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, where six visionaries had seen apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Then, on a more personal turn, he traveled to Scottsdale, Arizona, to visit the site of America’s most controversial Virgin Mary sighting.   In prose that “often reads like a spiritual whodunit,” The Miracle Detective takes you along Sullivan’s eight-year investigation into apocalyptic prophesies, claims of revelation, and the search for a genuine, direct encounter between man and god ( Publishers Weekly , starred review).

Publish Date: June 10, 2003
Publisher: Random House Publishing Group
Seller: Penguin Random House Canada

For many of us, feelings of deficiency are right around the corner. It doesn’t take much--just hearing of someone else’s accomplishments, being criticized, getting into an argument, making a mistake at work--to make us feel that we are not okay. Beginning to understand how our lives have become ensnared in this trance of unworthiness is our first step toward reconnecting with who we really are and what it means to live fully. —from Radical Acceptance “Believing that something is wrong with us is a deep and tenacious suffering,” says Tara Brach at the start of this illuminating book. This suffering emerges in crippling self-judgments and conflicts in our relationships, in addictions and perfectionism, in loneliness and overwork—all the forces that keep our lives constricted and unfulfilled. Radical Acceptance offers a path to freedom, including the day-to-day practical guidance developed over Dr. Brach’s twenty years of work with therapy clients and Buddhist students. Writing with great warmth and clarity, Tara Brach brings her teachings alive through personal stories and case histories, fresh interpretations of Buddhist tales, and guided meditations. Step by step, she leads us to trust our innate goodness, showing how we can develop the balance of clear-sightedness and compassion that is the essence of Radical Acceptance. Radical Acceptance does not mean self-indulgence or passivity. Instead it empowers genuine change: healing fear and shame and helping to build loving, authentic relationships. When we stop being at war with ourselves, we are free to live fully every precious moment of our lives.

A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back

Genre: Christianity
Price: $8.99
Publish Date: March 11, 2014
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Seller: Harper Collins Canada Limited

#1 New York Times best-seller with more than 11 million copies sold and Amazon’s #17 best-selling book of all time. Heaven Is for Real was the best-selling non-fiction book of 2011 as reported by Nielsen’s Bookscan, and it was made in to a major motion picture by Sony in 2014. “Do you remember the hospital, Colton?” Sonja said. “Yes, mommy, I remember,” he said. “That’s where the angels sang to me.” When Colton Burpo made it through an emergency appendectomy, his family was overjoyed at his miraculous survival. What they weren’t expecting, though, was the story that emerged in the months that followed—a story as beautiful as it was extraordinary, detailing their little boy’s trip to heaven and back. Colton, not yet four years old, told his parents he left his body during the surgery–and authenticated that claim by describing exactly what his parents were doing in another part of the hospital while he was being operated on. He talked of visiting heaven and relayed stories told to him by people he met there whom he had never met in life, sharing events that happened even before he was born. He also astonished his parents with descriptions and obscure details about heaven that matched the Bible exactly, though he had not yet learned to read. With disarming innocence and the plainspoken boldness of a child, Colton tells of meeting long-departed family members. He describes Jesus, the angels, how “really, really big” God is, and how much God loves us. Retold by his father, but using Colton’s uniquely simple words, Heaven Is for Real offers a glimpse of the world that awaits us, where as Colton says, “Nobody is old and nobody wears glasses.” Heaven Is for Real will forever change the way you think of eternity, offering the chance to see, and believe, like a child.  Continue the Burpos story in Heaven Changes Everything: The Rest of Our Story. Heaven Is for Real also is available in Spanish, El cielo es real. Bonus material in this special movie edition includes: Photos from the movie setUpdates from father, Todd, and son, Colton, on recent events including the making-of-the-movie experience“From the Set” Q&A’s with the movie’s filmmakers and actors

With so many injustices, small and great, across the world and right at our doorstep, what are people of faith to do? Since the 1930s, organizing movements for social justice in the U.S. have largely been built on assumptions that are secular origin—such as reliance on self-interest and having a common enemy as a motivator for change. But what if Christians were to shape their organizing around the implications of the truth that God is real and Jesus is risen? Alexia Salvatierra has developed a model of social action that is rooted in the values and convictions born of faith. Together with theologian Peter Heltzel, this model of "faith-rooted organizing" offers a path to meaningful social change that takes seriously the command to love God and to love our neighbor as ourself.

"Our church had diligently taught us that the days of miracles were passed. Believing this, eight members of the family had been permitted to die. But now, with the light of truth flashing in our hearts, we saw that that was a lie. A lie invented no doubt by the devil, and diligently heralded as truth by the Church, thus robbing mankind of their rightful inheritance through the blood of Jesus Christ." Nik Ripken - The Insanity of God artwork The Insanity of God
A True Story of Faith Resurrected
Nik Ripken
Genre: Christianity
Price: $12.99
Publish Date: January 01, 2013
Publisher: B&H Publishing Group
Seller: LifeWay Christian Resources

The Insanity of God is the personal and lifelong journey of an ordinary couple from rural Kentucky who thought they were going on just your ordinary missionary pilgrimage, but discovered it would be anything but. After spending over six hard years doing relief work in Somalia, and experiencing life where it looked like God had turned away completely and He was clueless about the tragedies of life, the couple had a crisis of faith and left Africa asking God, "Does the gospel work anywhere when it is really a hard place?  It sure didn't work in Somalia. Nik recalls that, “God had always been so real to me, to Ruth, and to our boys. But was He enough, for the utter weariness of soul I experienced at that time, in that place, under those circumstances?” It is a question that many have asked and one that, if answered, can lead us to a whole new world of faith. How does faith survive, let alone flourish in a place like the Middle East? How can Good truly overcome such evil? How do you maintain hope when all is darkness around you? How can we say “greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world” when it may not be visibly true in that place at that time? How does anyone live an abundant, victorious Christian life in our world’s toughest places? Can Christianity even work outside of Western, dressed-up, ordered nations? If so, how? The Insanity of God tells a story—a remarkable and unique story to be sure, yet at heart a very human story—of the Ripkens’ own spiritual and emotional odyssey. The gripping, narrative account of a personal pilgrimage into some of the toughest places on earth, combined with sobering and insightful stories of the remarkable people of faith Nik and Ruth encountered on their journeys, will serve as a powerful course of revelation, growth, and challenge for anyone who wants to know whether God truly is enough.

Jasher - The Book of Jasher artwork The Book of Jasher
Jasher
Genre: Bible Studies
Price: $0.99
Publish Date: December 28, 2017
Publisher: Pantianos Christianity
Seller: Maxime Jensens

The Book of Jasher, a lost book of the Bible comprising ninety-one chapters, is presented here complete in the celebrated 1840 English translation by Moses Samuel. Referenced twice in the New Testament scripture - once in Joshua and once in Second Samuel - the Book of Jasher is also known as the Sefer haYashar or the Book of the Upright. Its contents are wide-ranging; the creation of Man and the story of Adam and Eve, and the descendants of Noah comprise part of the text. The testing of Abraham by God also features, while Abraham's dialogue is notably expanded far beyond what is said in the Hebrew Bible.  The text has gained a great following since its translation to English in the mid-19th century. The Church of Latter-Day Saints founder Joseph Smith praised its detail, noting the book's elaboration on the condition of the Earth following the Great Flood. Other Biblical events also receive elaboration, aiding the reader to better envision what transpired; as such, the Book of Jasher can be considered a useful companion text to the canonical Bible.  Academic opinion of the Book of Jasher has varied; noting the linguistic composition of the Hebrew, and the presence of Medieval-era countries such as France (Franza) and Italia (Lombardy), scholars suggests that most of the text was composed far later than the Old Testament. However, many readers have praised its retelling of the Biblical canon, and are convinced that at least a portion of the text can be dated to the Biblical era, and that much of the book is the authentic word of God.  This edition is a reprint of the popular and respected English publication by Mordecai Manuel Noah. A writer, editor and publisher based in New York, Noah used his fluency in Hebrew and English to source and commission an impressive and accurate rendition of the ancient text. When promoting the book, Noah did however claim that the revered historian Josephus spoke favorably of Jasher: no such mention actually existed.  The translator is Moses Samuel, who was a Jewish author based in Liverpool, England during the 1840s. Upon reading the original Hebrew, Samuel felt immensely impressed by the work, and quickly set about creating this accurate translation which remains reputable and much-consulted to this day.  This edition of the Book of Jasher is attractively arranged in a dual columned format, with a table of contents for ease of reference.

J. Dwight Pentecost - Things to Come artwork Things to Come
A Study in Biblical Eschatology
J. Dwight Pentecost
Genre: Religion & Spirituality
Price: $10.99
Publish Date: May 11, 2010
Publisher: Zondervan Academic
Seller: Harper Collins Canada Limited

Because of the prominence of prophecy in Scripture, many excellent books have appeared dealing with prophetic subjects. Until recently, however, the treatment of prophecy has been either apologetic or expository, and prophetic themes have been developed individually apart from their relation to the whole revealed prophetic program. Much of our knowledge has been only fragmentary and unrelated. Dr. Dwight Pentecost’s monumental text, Things to Come, has changed all that. In this massive, highly successful book, Dr. Pentecost has synthesized the whole field of prophecy into a unified biblical doctrine, a systematic and complete biblical eschatology. With nearly a quarter of a million copies sold, Things to Come has earned its place in the library of the pastor, the scholar, and the seminarian or Bible institute student. In addition, it offers a comprehensive and accessible study for anyone interested in the important subject of biblical prophecy.

Tranquility Hazelwood is anything but tranquil. Independent, determined, opinionated, talkative, and frustrated, yes. Cool and composed, no. And what’s been ruffling her feathers lately is that question a certain speaker dared tell a group of single women to ask themselves: “Why am I not married by now?” That question sticks in her mind like a thorn. Still unmarried, and with her biological clock ticking, her impatience is rising—someone thinks it’s her fault she’s not married yet? When she finally stops seeing red and really thinks about this audacious question, she discovers she has an irresistible urge to ask other single women the very same thing. Nicely, of course. Sincerely. Maybe their answers will help her figure out some of her own issues, starting with that question of why God hadn’t sent along Mr. Right yet. Two lists and 21 interviews later those answers weren’t exactly what she’d been expecting.

During the last years of his life, Leo Tolstoy kept one book invariably on his desk, read and reread it to his family, and recommended it to all his friends: a compendium of wise thoughts gathered over the course of a decade from his wide-ranging readings in philosophy and religion, and from his own spiritual meditations. It was banned under the Communists, and only one volume, A Calendar of Wisdom , drawn largely from the writings of other famous thinkers, has been published before in English. Wise Thoughts For Every Day is the volume comprising Tolstoy’s own most essential ideas about spirituality and what it is to live a good life. Designed by Tolstoy to be a cycle of daily readings, this book offers thoughts and aphorisms for every day according to a succession of themes repeated each month—such as God, the soul, desire, our passions, humility, inequality, evil, truth, happiness, prayer, and the blessings of love. At once challenging, comforting, and inspiring, this is a spiritual treasure trove and a book of great human warmth.
