Pete Souza - Shade artwork Shade
A Tale of Two Presidents
Pete Souza
Genre: Photography
Price: $16.99
Publish Date: October 16, 2018
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company
Seller: Hachette Digital, Inc.

From Pete Souza, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Obama: An Intimate Portrait , comes a potent commentary on the Presidency -- and our country. As Chief Official White House Photographer, Pete Souza spent more time alongside President Barack Obama than almost anyone else. His years photographing the President gave him an intimate behind-the-scenes view of the unique gravity of the Office of the Presidency -- and the tremendous responsibility that comes with it. Now, as a concerned citizen observing the Trump administration, he is standing up and speaking out. Shade is a portrait in Presidential contrasts, telling the tale of the Obama and Trump administrations through a series of visual juxtapositions. Here, more than one hundred of Souza's unforgettable images of President Obama deliver new power and meaning when framed by the tweets, news headlines, and quotes that defined the first 500 days of the Trump White House. What began with Souza's Instagram posts soon after President Trump's inauguration in January 2017 has become a potent commentary on the state of the Presidency, and our country. Some call this "throwing shade." Souza calls it telling the truth. In Shade , Souza's photographs are more than a rejoinder to the chaos, abuses of power, and destructive policies that now define our nation's highest office. They are a reminder of a President we could believe in, and a courageous defense of American values.

Part psychological thriller, part topical scientific speculation, and part analysis of the relationship between fathers and their sons, it combines elegant structural simplicity with an astonishing intellectual and emotional depth...What a tremendous play this is, moving thought-provoking and dramatically thrilling' - Daily Telegraph 'Rarely in my theatre-going experience has a new play conveyed such a disturbing or enthralling impression of domestic weirdness that some families may endure in a not entirely hypothetical future... It's an astonishing event' - Evening Standard

Work on Smile began hot on the heels of the ground-breaking Pet Sounds, when Brian Wilson collaborated with Van Dyke Parks to create a 'musical story of America'. However, production would famously collapse under a tide of internal fighting, record business chicanery and Brian's own health problems. In this unique account, Domenic Priore interviews all the main players and documents every aspect of the Smile experience, from its troubled inception to Wilson's brave attempt to finish what he started in 2005. The book includes detailed accounts of studio work, the triumphant live shows in Europe and the US, and a host of exclusive photos from photographer Guy Webster.

Next to having a real live teacher, there isn’t an easier, more enjoyable and fun-filled way to learn to play the piano than this new version of one of the most successful adult piano methods ever written. Alfred’s Basic Adult Piano Course is the leading method used by piano teachers all over the world – and yes, it has been translated in many languages. And now you have the opportunity to teach yourself from this very special edition as well. What is truly unique about this 3-volume edition is that every song has an audio track that allows you to hear the song while following the music page. In addition, there is a video of Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, a university trained piano teacher, not only describing any new elements on the page, but performing the piece as well. You get to see Gayle’s hands as she performs the piece, while the music she is playing is highlighted above her hands. This means you can simultaneously see the music and hear the piece as she plays. And if that is not enough, there is Gayle on an audio recording talking to you as a teacher might, pointing out how to practice the page, what to watch for, what is new, and how to have a successful performance. There is no reason you can’t be playing very easy versions of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, Aura Lee, the Mexican Hat Dance, Au claire de la lune, Jingle Bells, Merrily We Roll Along, Largo (from the New World), Mary Ann, and ending with the very popular, When the Saints Go Marching In, in a very short time. We begin our course right from the beginning, starting with how to sit at the piano. You’ll soon learn about the keyboard, the names of the notes, and how to read from a music staff. Also included in Volume 1 are how to play the C major, G7th, and F major chords. If you’ve played the piano before but haven’t played for a long while, or if you always wanted to sit down and play but for one reason or another, never had the time, now you have a fool-proof way to get started and see how much fun you’ve been missing. This is how you can get started right now!!!

Respect for Acting "This fascinating and detailed book about acting is Miss Hagen's credo, the accumulated wisdom of her years spent in intimate communion with her art. It is at once the voicing of her exacting standards for herself and those she [taught], and an explanation of the means to the end." --Publishers Weekly "Hagen adds to the large corpus of titles on acting with vivid dicta drawn from experience, skill, and a sense of personal and professional worth. Her principal asset in this treatment is her truly significant imagination. Her 'object exercises' display a wealth of detail with which to stimulate the student preparing a scene for presentation." --Library Journal "Uta Hagen's Respect for Acting . . . is a relatively small book. But within it, Miss Hagen tells the young actor about as much as can be conveyed in print of his craft." --Los Angeles Times "There are almost no American actors uninfluenced by Uta Hagen." --Fritz Weaver "This is a textbook for aspiring actors, but working thespians can profit much by it. Anyone with just a casual interest in the theater should also enjoy its behind-the-scenes flavor." --King Features Syndicate

ABOUT THE BOOK Satrapi enjoyed the art of both writing and drawing and felt combining them were better than choosing one or the other. This is how, “inspired, Satrapi created a book of black-and-white comic strips about living in Tehran from ages six to 14,” (www.noteablebiographies.com) and then wrote a second volume chronicling her events in Austria from 14 up until her return to Iran at age 18, ending with her college years at 25. Since Persepolis was originally written in French, it “was published in France in two volumes in 2000 and 2001,” and eventually “appeared in the United States in 2003 and 2004.” (www.noteablebiographies.com) In 2007, The Complete Persepolis was published in a single volume, combining Persepolis 1: The Story of a Childhood and Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return. The books can either be purchased as single volumes or as ‘one’ volume combining both stories. MEET THE AUTHOR A current San Francisco Bay Area resident, Natacha Pavlov has been an avid reader and writer since her early years spent growing up in Brussels, Belgium. She has French-English non-profit translation experience and looks forward to increasing her writing through various platforms in the near future. Although the list keeps growing, she has interest in reading and writing about classics, mythology (of any/all traditions), horror/gothic fiction, 18th and 19th century French novels, Middle Eastern history and politics (particularly Palestine-Israel) and early Christianity. Fueled by her culturally diverse heritage, her educational and personal interests have led her to engage in extensive travel and to live in places such as Paris, France and Jerusalem, Israel. Amidst all, pens, papers and books have always proven loyal companions. And she won’t lie… chocolate has always helped too! She strives to keep exploring the world through books as well as further travel experiences that will ensure continued growth. You can read about some of her experiences in Jerusalem at www.aneasterinjerusalem.blogspot.com. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Iranians are very unhappy with the Shah’s rule, leading many people to protest. Ever ready to stand up for what was right, Marjane is always pleading to join her parents in political demonstrations, which they refuse due to her young age. However, we find that Satrapi can also have a rebellious side, as proven in the incident in which she has her maid Mehri accompany her to a demonstration on the worst day they could’ve gone: Black Friday. Indeed, Marjane’s mother slaps them both when they return home, as this was the day when so many people had died in one neighborhood that a rumor spread that it was Israeli soldiers who had attacked them, when indeed it had been their own who attacked. (Persepolis 1, pg. 38-39) Things start to look up when the Shah finally leaves his post, overthrown by the 1979 Islamic Revolution, leading the whole country to rejoice. Marjane meets two political prisoners who are released after the Shah’s departure: two Communists named Siamak and Moshen. Buy a copy to keep reading!
