With InstaRead Chapter-by-Chapter Summaries, you can get the essence of a book in 30 minutes or less. We read every chapter and summarize it in one or two paragraphs so you can get the information contained in the book at a much faster rate.  This is an InstaRead Summary of Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife by Eben Alexander III M.D.  Below is a preview of the earlier sections of the summary:  1: The Pain  Eben Alexander and Holley met in 1977,  while he was in medical school. Nearly three years later the young couple is married and living in a modest apartment in Durham, North Carolina. In the years that follow they relocate several times as he trains to be a successful neurosurgeon. Eben the fourth is born in England in 1987 and then a second son is born in Boston in 1998. The family spends a total of fifteen years in the Boston with Eben working at Harvard Medical School. But in 2007, they move to Virginia to be closer to their extended family.  In the early hours of Monday November 10, 2008 Eben awakes with back pain. Unable to return to sleep the doctor assumes that his pain is caused by the flu the family was still recovering from. The only one that had remained healthy was Eben IV, who was away at college. Thinking that the warmth of a hot bath might bring him some relief, Eben heads to the bathroom. It doesn’t.  Feeling worse, he returns to bed. Holley is so concerned that she suggests calling an ambulance. Eben reassures her that he is fine, he just wants to try and sleep.  For the next two hours, he slips in and out of consciousness. When Holley tries to wake him she is shocked to find him unresponsive and rigid. She quickly dials 911. Ten minutes later the doctor has become a patient and is on the way to the Emergency Room.  2: The Hospital  When the fifty four year old enters the ER, he is convulsing and has no control over his flailing limbs. Laura Potter is the ER physician that morning. It does not take long for her to realize that the patient on the gurney is her colleague, Dr. Alexander. She quickly runs through a list of  things that could be causing the symptoms: a stroke, brain tumor or meningitis. With the last disease in mind, Eben is sedated so the staff can perform a lumbar puncture. This procedure, used to detect meningitis, uses a syringe to extract the fluid that covers the surface of the spinal cord. In a healthy individual this fluid would be clear; any opaqueness in a sample suggests an infection or hemorrhage. To Dr. Potter’s surprise the fluid she draws from Eben’s spinal column is full of pus, the fluid is cloudy and tinged with green.  The meninges are the membranes that line the inside of the skull and spine. Meningitis is a swelling of these membranes following an infection from a virus or, more rarely, bacteria. Approximately 99% of people that contract viral meningitis will survive the disease. Bacterial Meningitis has a much higher mortality rate of 15-40% even if treated with immediate antibiotic treatment. One of the deadliest forms of Meningitis is caused by E.coli.  E.coli colonies usually live in the digestive tract and pose no problem. If, however, this resistant strain manages to get into the cerebrospinal fluid, it will begin taking...

Atomic Habits | An Easy & Proven Way to Build  Good Habits & Break Bad Ones | A Comprehensive Summary Hired as the performance director of professional cycling for England in 2003, Dave Brailsford had his work cut out for him. For the previous century, British cyclists performed terribly, winning only one gold medal and never winning the Tour de France. Brailsford had a plan to turn around British cycling. He called his strategy ‚ the aggregation of marginal gains . This involves deconstructing every aspect of riding a bike, and then consistently improving each aspect by 1%. Over time, these small changes compound into incredible performance outcomes.  Brailsford implemented hundreds of small improvements, both obvious (e.g. equipping better bike seats) and non-obvious (finding the best pillow and mattress so the cyclists had optimal sleep). The results were extreme. British cyclists won 66 Olympic/Paralympic gold medals, 5 Tour de France races, and set numerous world records in the decade after Brailsford began.  The image to the right shows the results of both improving and regressing by 1% every day. Over the course of a week the changes are small, but over the course of a year the changes are massive. Over a short period of time, the effects of compounding are barely noticeable. But over longer periods of time, compounding will generate very powerful outcomes. While many of us over-weight the importance of grand, singular moments, we also under-weight tiny changes, the 1% improvements, that occur day to day. The slow rate of change makes it difficult for us to see what transformation is underway.  Habits are a double-edged sword and can accelerate either growth or deterioration. Success or failure in any area of your life is merely a lagging indicator of the quality of your daily habits. Here’s another way of thinking about enormity of compound interest on tiny 1% improvements – If you regress 1% a day for an entire year, it’s the equivalent of going from the height of a one story house (10 feet tall) to the height of a large apple (3 inches tall).   Habits often behave the same way as melting ice- you see no new result until you break through a certain point. This means tangible results of a new habit are delayed early on. This effort isn’t wasted, it is stored (hence the term “latent”). Anxious People - A Comprehensive Summary A bank robber rushes into a cashless bank on the day before New Year’s Eve. After her failed attempt to get money, she tries to escape from the police so she runs into the nearest building, up the stairs, and into an apartment. The apartment is currently for sale, and there is a viewing going on there, so she meets the seven prospective buyers and the real estate agent, and she takes them hostage. As they spend time together in the apartment they all get to know each other. Ten years before the hostage drama, a man jumped off a bridge and killed himself because he had financial problems and he could not get a loan from the bank. Zara, one of the hostages, who runs a bank, met that man before: she was the one who told him that he cannot get any money. She received a letter from him after the suicide, but she has not opened it, because she felt so bad about the incident. She has been carrying the letter with her for ten years. Ro and Julia are a young couple, who are expecting a baby and try to find a home for themselves, which is why they went to the apartment showing. They are full of fear and insecurity, they are afraid of not being good enough for each other and the baby. Anna-Lena and Roger have been married for many years. They have grown-up children, but no grandchildren. Roger used to be an architect but he gave up his career to be with the children, while Anna-Lena could work. She had a very successful career. Now they have a new project: they buy apartments, renovate them, and then sell them. Estelle is an eighty-seven year-old woman, who is quite lonely. She had a husband, Knut, who died a few years ago and she misses him very much. Now she is looking for an apartment for her daughter. It turns out that there is one more person in the apartment who is not a prospective buyer: Lennart was hiding in the toilet. Lennart is an actor who was hired by Anna-Lena. He hid in the toilet without his clothes, wearing a rabbit-head. He makes money by manipulating apartment prices. Sometimes he plays the role of the drunk, loud neighbor, now he had to ruin the viewing in the ridiculous rabbit costume. The real estate agent was hiding in the closet above the ceiling. She was there when she heard that the bank robber arrived, and she was scared so she decided to stay there until the prospective buyers found her. While they were in the apartment, the bank robber told them her story. Her husband left her because he had an affair with her boss. Her boss did not want to have an uncomfortable situation at their workplace so she was fired. She could not find a job, she lost her home because their house was officially her husband’s property, and without a stable home and job, she was about to lose her children. So she wanted to steal some money, but not too much. She just wanted to steal enough to pay the rent. After she had told the story, the people she held hostage started feeling sorry for her and they decided to help her. Estelle reveals that she is the owner of the apartment and she had a good relationship with the neighbor, so she has the keys to the apartment next door. They hid the bank robber there, and when the police questioned them they were unhelpful and they pretended to be complete idiots. Jack and his father Jim were both police officers. They were responsible for the hostage case. Jim was the one who went up to the apartment to talk with the bank robber. He also felt sorry for her so he decided to help. After the hostage drama and the interviews, he told Jack that he helped the bank robber. Since nobody got hurt, they did not pursue the case.
