P.G. Wodehouse was an English author and one of the most widely read humorists of the 20th century. Wodehouse worked extensively on his books, sometimes having two or more in preparation simultaneously. He would take up to two years to build a plot and write a scenario of about thirty thousand words. After the scenario was complete he would write the story. Early in his career he would produce a novel in about three months, but he slowed in old age to around six months. He used a mixture of Edwardian slang, quotations from and allusions to numerous poets, and several literary techniques to produce a prose style that has been compared to comic poetry and musical comedy. |

Combining the latest developments and research discoveries, board-certified gastroenterologist and medical host on CNN and Fox News, Dr. Roshini Raj shows the ways in which the microbiome impacts overall well-being, and helps readers reset their biological clocks by improving their gut health. With one in four Americans suffering from digestive health issues every day, gut health has become an increasingly important part of wellness. With the human body, so many issues can be improved upon, or cured, by balancing the microbiome. But the microbiome—a community of bacteria, viruses, and yeasts that dwell in the body—has long been something that the average person can find baffling—and maybe a little bit gross. By offering simple and straightforward answers to questions like what one should be eating, what probiotics are, which vitamins and medicines really work, Dr. Raj demystifies the gut. She uses the idea of a home renovation to show how different organs and parts of the body can be “renovated” in order to optimize the microbiome. After all, balancing one’s microbiome improves digestive health, brain function, emotional stability, the body’s response to inflammation, immunity, and lessens premature aging. Melding the latest developments and discoveries in microbiome research, along with Dr. Raj’s practical tips developed from her years of clinical experience, Gut Renovation shows readers how to turn back the biological clock and revamp the way they live forever. |

“For weeks and weeks people from ethnic minority communities have been wanting to know how they can better protect themselves from coronavirus.” BBC News June 13th 2020 We believe that during Covid-19, ethnic minority communities in the UK, the USA and elsewhere, and all others vulnerable to seasonal Vitamin D deficiency, have been seriously let down by politicians and medical-scientific officialdom. As a result they have been needlessly deprived of extensive biological knowledge that would have protected them against disease and death from a novel virus, for which adequate levels of Vitamin D are essential. We are two retired physicians of similar ages, who together bring a century of experience to many aspects of medical practice and medical education. This includes the endocrinology of vitamin D, the prevention and treatment of serious infections, experience of previous pandemics, and a sadly sceptical view of present medicoscientific politics. During the course of the Covid-19 disaster we both came up against the neglect of first-line immunity provided by adequate levels of Vitamin D, critically important for effective defence against invasion by all new viruses, and supported by science. This is explored from many aspects in this book, in which we identify important lessons for the future, including the folly of relying exclusively on Big-Pharma and the scientists it supports. |

The brain may be the seat of consciousness and the engine of all human experience, but it’s also messy, fallible and disorganized. It’s undeniably impressive, but it’s far from perfect, and these imperfections influence everything that humans say, do and experience. In The Idiot Brain, Dean Burnett celebrates the downright laughable things our minds do to us, as well as exposing the fact that people are often way off in their thinking about how the brain works. For example, did you know that your memory is egotistical?stress can actually increase your performance at a task?conspiracy theories and superstitions stem from your brain’s insistence that the world isn’t random?the brain’s limitations mean you really can miss something that’s right under your nose?the way the brain’s processing works means that time really does fly if you’re having fun?alcohol can sometimes improve your memory? Dean Burnett’s unpredictable and entertaining first book explores the unexpected side of everyday life, highlighting where conventional thinking is wrong and how our brains trip us up at every turn. This is lucid, funny and smart: in short, the best kind of popular science. |

Strategic design is about applying the principles of traditional design to "big picture" systemic challenges such as healthcare, education and climate change. It redefines how problems are approached and aims to deliver more resilient solutions. In this short book, Dan Hill outlines a new vocabulary of design, one that needs to be smuggled into the upper echelons of power. He asserts that, increasingly, effective design means engaging with the messy politics - the dark matter - taking place above the designer's head. And that may mean redesigning the organisation that hires you. |

Also included here are several early lectures on education (1906–1911). People speak different languages, and always have. The Ancient Greeks took no notice of anything unless it was said in Greek; the Romans made everyone speak Latin; and in India, people learned their neighbours' languages - as did many ordinary Europeans in times past. But today, we all use translation to cope with the diversity of languages. Without translation there would be no world news, not much of a reading list in any subject at college, no repair manuals for cars or planes, and we wouldn't even be able to put together flat pack furniture. Is That a Fish in Your Ear? ranges across the whole of human experience, from foreign films to philosophy, to show why translation is at the heart of what we do and who we are. What's the difference between translating unprepared natural speech, and translating Madame Bovary? How do you translate a joke? What's the difference between a native tongue and a learned one? Can you translate between any pair of languages, or only between some? What really goes on when world leaders speak at the UN? Can machines ever replace human translators, and if not, why? The biggest question is how do we ever really know that we've grasped what anybody else says - in our own language or in another? Surprising, witty and written with great joie de vivre, this book is all about us, and how we understand each other. |

Iodine is also used in the form of potassium iodide for radiation emergencies to protect the thyroid gland against radioactive iodides. 3. Keep bones and body strong Bone marrow produces our blood Eat foods rich in calcium like yogurt, cheese, milk, and dark green vegetables. Eat foods rich in Vitamin D, like eggs, fatty fish, cereal, and fortified milk. Exercise and stay active. It is best to do weight-bearing exercise such as walking, jogging, stair climbing, dancing, or lifting weights for 2½ hours a week. One way to do this is to be active 30 minutes a day at least 5 days a week. Begin slowly especially if a person has not been active. 6. Do not drink more than 2 alcohol drinks a day for a man or 1 alcohol drink a day for a woman. Alcohol use also increases the chance of falling and breaking a bone. Alcohol can affect the neurons and brain cells. 7. Stop or do not begin smoking. It also interferes with blood supply and healing. Chapter 1 Iodine Iodine is an essential component of the thyroid hormones which regulates metabolic rate, growth and promote protein synthesis. It is found in seafood, seaweeds, iodized salt. Iodine a trace mineral is required by the body for the synthesis of the thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). T4 contains 4 iodine atoms. When one of the iodine atoms is stripped off of T4, it becomes T3 with 3 iodine atoms remaining. Under normal circumstances the body contains approximately 20 to 30 mg of iodine, most of which is stored in the thyroid gland located in the front of the neck just under the voice box. Smaller amounts of iodine are also found in lactating mammary glands, the stomach lining, salivary glands and in the blood. As a component of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), iodine is essential to human life. Without sufficient iodine, the body is unable to synthesize these hormones and because the thyroid hormones regulate metabolism in every cell of the body and play a role in virtually all physiological functions, an iodine deficiency can have a devastating impact on the health and well-being. What forces bring ordinary people together in public to make their voices heard? What means do they use to break through impediments to democratic participation?  Unruly Rhetorics is a collection of essays from scholars in rhetoric, communication, and writing studies inquiring into conditions for activism, political protest, and public assembly. An introduction drawing on Jacques Rancière and Judith Butler explores the conditions under which civil discourse cannot adequately redress suffering or injustice. The essays offer analyses of “unruliness” in case studies from both twenty-first-century and historical sites of social-justice protest.  The collection concludes with an afterword highlighting and inviting further exploration of the ethical, political, and pedagogical questions unruly rhetorics raise. Examining multiple modes of expression—embodied, print, digital, and sonic— Unruly Rhetorics points to the possibility that unruliness, more than just one of many rhetorical strategies within political activity, is constitutive of the political itself. |
