“The ultimate literary bucket list.” — The Washington Post “If there’s a heaven just for readers, this is it.” — O, The Oprah Magazine          Celebrate the pleasure of reading and the thrill of discovering new titles in an extraordinary book that’s as compulsively readable, entertaining, surprising, and enlightening as the 1,000-plus titles it recommends. Covering fiction, poetry, science and science fiction, memoir, travel writing, biography, children’s books, history, and more, 1,000 Books to Read Before You Die ranges across cultures and through time to offer an eclectic collection of works that each deserve to come with the recommendation, You have to read this. But it’s not a proscriptive list of the “great works”—rather, it’s a celebration of the glorious mosaic that is our literary heritage. Flip it open to any page and be transfixed by a fresh take on a very favorite book. Or come across a title you always meant to read and never got around to. Or, like browsing in the best kind of bookshop, stumble on a completely unknown author and work, and feel that tingle of discovery. There are classics, of course, and unexpected treasures, too. Lists to help pick and choose, like Offbeat Escapes, or A Long Climb, but What a View. And its alphabetical arrangement by author assures that surprises await on almost every turn of the page, with Cormac McCarthy and The Road next to Robert McCloskey and Make Way for Ducklings, Alice Walker next to Izaac Walton.  There are nuts and bolts, too—best editions to read, other books by the author, “if you like this, you’ll like that” recommendations , and an interesting endnote of adaptations where appropriate. Add it all up, and in fact there are more than six thousand titles by nearly four thousand authors mentioned—a life-changing list for a lifetime of reading. “948 pages later, you still want more!” —THE WASHINGTON POST |

Praise for A Dictionary of Love "A Dictionary of Love is a veritable Valentine of a book. It's a tidy collection of bon mots on the subject of love." The Sunday Herald, Monterrey, CA "A really fun book to read. There is either a good laugh or a real thought provoker (or even both) on each page." New England Bride "Consider these 'pearls of wisdom' from A Dictionary of Love" Family Circle "Who wrote the book of love? The Answer, historians will argue. might be pretty difficult to trace. But one thing is certainly true, whoever wrote the book of love could probably have used Gil Friedman's A Dictionary of Love, on the desk beside the tablets, papyrus sheets, sheepskin, or whatever the muses used in the misty land of romantic wisdom." Chico Enterprise Record, Chico, CA "With its variety of quotes—from the acerbic to the spiritual to the sentimental—this collection is never dull, and it also offers many thoughts worth meditating on." Small Press Review "Beautiful Work." John Robbins, author of Diet for a Small America "...Very beautiful book, we will refer to it often." Joyce and Barry Visell, authors of The Shared Heart "What a joy to receive your wonderful book. I am honored you included mine." Susan Jeffers, author of Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway "A great depository of quotes on love." Single Adult Ministry Information "What sets Mr. Friedman's volume apart from earlier anthologies on the theme of love is that he included many New Age sages and they add a touch of seriousness and timeliness. There is Rollo May, Meher Baba, Gerald G. Jampolsky, Bernie S. Siegal, to mention just a few." North Coast News "Funny, rueful, practical, wise and compassionate, this collection is a recommended gift to anyone who is in or might be in a love relationship (like teenagers). One charming feature is the great range of attitudes displayed. One can disagree totally with one, and on the same page find one that rings true and provides an insight. Lots of fun, and more educational than many a tome." New Age Retailer "This rich reference book is a must for all of us who want to express and understand love. Helpful, funny, bittersweet comments and insights. . . In all, about 300 lovers from various times and places unite to guide the reader on an odyssey invaluable to those who write lyrics, poetry, or an occasional love letter. It would make a suitable gift to mark either the end or the beginning of a love affair." Body, Mind Spirit "Witty, profound and sometimes just plain fun this book is a delightful addition to the growing ranks of subject specific quotation books. It will be welcome by anyone—reader, writer, or librarian—who has ever searched in vain for just the right quote on the subject of love." Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Death cleaning is the process of going through your belongings and deciding how to get rid of the things you don’t want anymore. It is a Swedish term that refers to removing unnecessary things and making your home nice and orderly when you think the time is coming closer for you to leave the planet. #2 The world is a worried place. Floods, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, fires, and wars follow one another. To listen to the media or read newspapers makes me depressed. I would shrivel up if I could not mix the negativity of the world’s news with good friends, experiences out in the natural world, music, or beautiful things. |

With Instaread Summaries, you can get the summary of a book in 30 minutes or less. We read every chapter, summarize and analyze it for your convenience.  This is an Instaread Summary of 'Creativity, Inc.' by Ed Catmull. Below is a preview of the earlier sections of the summary: Chapter 1   Every Sunday, as a kid, Catmull watched on TV The Wonderful World of Disney, where Disney explained how they made their animations and incorporated technological breakthroughs into their work. One day, Catmull had a life-changing realization: a good animation was measured by whether or not the  character on the screen made you believe it was a thinking being. He decided he wanted to become an animator and create emotional characters.   Catmull graduated with a double major in Physics and Computer Science from the University of Utah. In his graduate program he met professor Ivan Sutherland, a pioneer in computer graphics and director of the computer graphics program. The program was funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), the creators of the first computer network, ARPANET, which would later evolve into the Internet. ARPA was developed as a response to the threat of the Soviet Sputnik satellite, the first of its kind. The U.S. felt threatened by Soviet technological advancements and they developed ARPA to stay up with the Soviets. To Catmull, the lesson to be learned from this was when the competition gets smart, you need to get smarter. Catmull found enormous inspiration in the computer graphics program, not only from the technology he was discovering but also from his fellow students. The collaborative and creative atmosphere he experienced there was something he later tried to emulate at Pixar.   In 1972, Catmull made his first animated film, a digitized model of his left hand. Hand became a reference for state-of-the-art computer animation.   Professor Sutherland came up with the idea of an exchange program with Disney. Disney would send an animator to the University of Utah to learn about new technologies, and the university would send one of their students to learn about storytelling. Catmull was sent to propose... |

What is the most challenging thing about learning Spanish? It's finding helpful and engaging reading material that you can actually understand… That is exactly what inspired us to write this book. How is a student supposed to learn when language instructors love providing materials that are tough expert-level literature with tons of grammar and rules? That style of book for new language learners can be overwhelming, and lead you to flip back and forth between a dictionary and your book… constantly! Not an effective use of your time nor the best way to learn.  Is this how children learn their language skills?
